Buy a developer word

The words that end up in a README badge, which is where one of these does the most work.

These are the words that end up in a README, which is the only place on this site where a purchase keeps working after the day it is made. Every owner gets a live badge that renders the word, the holder and the price, and updates itself — so it is still true a year after it is installed.

A badge in a repository with real traffic is seen by the exact people you sell to, on a page they are already reading for other reasons, indefinitely. That is a different kind of placement from the board, and it is the one that keeps working while you are asleep.

The words here are deliberately unglamorous. "auth", "deploy", "database" and "terminal" are not clever, and that is the point: they are what somebody types when they are looking for the thing you built.

Why you would want one

You have a repository people actually read. A badge in it puts the word in front of the developers you sell to, on a page they opened for another reason entirely.

What buying one costs

Every word carries a reserve, the price under which it does not sell — the lowest in this category is $25, and bidding opens well below it. Each later bid has to clear the current one by at least $5 or 10%, whichever is larger, and a bid in the last minutes pushes the close back. Whoever is highest when it ends owns the word permanently — there is nothing to renew, and no way for anyone to take it afterwards.

What you get is the word's page with your name, a line of copy, a logo and one outbound link; a slot on the board; a vanity URL you can say out loud; a live badge for your README; and click counts tagged so the traffic shows up in your own analytics. The full rules.
