A badge that keeps working after you buy
Every word on this site has a live badge. It shows the word and what it costs right now, it links back to the word's page, and it updates itself — so a README carrying it is still telling the truth about the price a year later, and on the day the word next to yours sells for ten times what you paid.
Pick any of the 100 words below to see the badge you would get. Unclaimed words render as unclaimed, so what you are looking at is the real image rather than a mock-up of one.

The board and the word's page reach people who came to this site. The badge reaches people who did not, on a page you control, for as long as you hold the word — and unlike everything else you could spend the same money on, it does not stop the day you stop paying, because there is nothing to keep paying.
For a developer tool this is usually the whole argument. A badge in a repository with real traffic is seen by the exact people the tool sells to, on a page they are already reading for other reasons, indefinitely.
Why it does not carry your name
A badge is installed once and then left alone for years. Everything inside the image is therefore a thing that has to stay true without anybody touching it again, and a name is the least stable thing you own: companies get renamed, acquired, and rebranded far more often than they change what they are called on an auction site.
So the badge names the word and the price, and links to the page that names you. Edit your display name here and every badge in every repository follows, because none of them had to say it in the first place.
Questions
- What is the badge?
- An SVG served from this site showing a word and what it currently costs. You paste one line of Markdown into a README, a site footer or an email signature, and it renders wherever that page renders. There is nothing to install and no script involved.
- Does it update on its own?
- Yes. It is generated on request rather than saved as a file, with a short cache, so a new bid shows up in it within about a minute, and so does the word selling. Once it has sold the price stops moving, and the badge is simply correct from then on.
- Does it show my company name?
- No, deliberately, and it is worth more to you this way. Rename the company, get acquired, change what you call yourself — the badge in every README that already links to you keeps working, because none of them had to say your name to begin with. The word and the price are in the image; your name is on the page it links to, where you can edit it.
- Do I need to own a word to use it?
- To install one meaningfully, yes — an unclaimed word renders as unclaimed, which says nothing about you. But every badge is public and can be previewed here before you buy anything.
- Does it work on GitHub?
- Yes. GitHub proxies images through its own cache, so the badge is fetched by that proxy rather than by each reader, and the short cache on our side is what keeps the price current through it.
